Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

HTX IPA by Urban South Brewery was judged as a Hazy IPA (21C BJCP 2021). The aroma is strong in hops that are floral, earthy and somewhat herbal. There is a modest tropical fruit aroma as well, along with a little chalkiness. With a few spins of the glass and some rest, a more pronounced... Read More

A moderate malt caramel and light toasty/biscuit-like malt aroma is up front in the nose for this beer. A little swirl of the glass releases more toast and biscuit aroma with just a hint of earthy noble hops in the background. The color is light copper, definitely in the Märzen tradition rather... Creating an American IPA, BJCP (21A) is easy in some ways (straightforward ingredients, fermentation process, lots of latitude for interpretation) and difficult in other ways (making it unique, well-balanced and memorable). The field for IPAs is huge, so you want to be discrete about selection... Read More

Nectarine Golden Ale by pFriem Family Brewers was judged as a Wild Specialty Beer (28C). Nectarine flesh is notable in combination with some sweet malt and fermentation characteristics that are quite subtle in the nose. The pour is somewhat cloudy from a lot of in-bottle carbonation. The color... Read More

Pear Lambic by Area Two Experimental Brewing was judged as a Fruit Lambic (BJCP Style 23F) with pear. The pear is obvious in the aroma with fruity esters that are distinctively pear-like dominating the nose. Some rounded wheat and malt aromas come through underneath as slightly bready. The... Triple Sunshine by Lawson's Finest Liquids is being judged as a Double IPA (22A). The aroma is a little catty or tomato-like, probably from the combination of unique and intensively fruity hop strains. If I try to break the aroma down more, it is predominantly grapefruit and citrus rind with... Read More
