Dan Preston

Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Mango Habanero IPA by Motorworks Brewing is an IPA (BJCP category 21A), but due to the additions of mango and habanero it shifts to Fruit & Spice Beer, which is BJCP 2015 category 29B. These additions are definitely complementary to the style as IPAs go great with both tropical fruit and... Paradise Park 100 by Urban South Brewery is a lo-calorie lager that falls under BJCP category 1A as a Light Lager. This is the same category as the light macros (Bud Light, etc), but it’s certainly a step above in quality despite a similar appearance. It pours a pale straw color with brilliant... Read More

This pale ale pours an exceptionally clear, light golden color with a pure, white head and lasting lacing. The nose is pretty balanced between malt and hops. There is a light grainy malt character with a hint of toast that accompanies some candied melon, grapefruit, and orange hops. Pale ales... Read More

Probably the most similar to the original King of Hop DIPA. The aroma is mostly tropical/citrusy hops with a tinge of spicy heat. The flavor is similar with tropical/citrus hops, then followed by peppery spice that lingers. The heat builds on the lips and palate and becomes even more exaggerated... Read More
