Neon Roses by Wild Heaven Beer was reviewed using parameters established by the Beer Judge Certification Program and defined under their style guidelines as a Wheatwine (category 22D).
Lots of complexity in the aroma. Toasted malt notes with hints of mint and bourbon are present, and alcohol warms the nostrils without the burn often found in beers brewed at higher gravities.
Quite clear, garnet in color and topped by a medium cream-colored head that poured up nicely and then fell off.
If there was a beer made for the Kentucky Derby this would be the one. Bourbon barrel flavors and mint meld well with earthy hop character along with alcohol complexity and a touch of fruity esters to deliver a uniqueness not found elsewhere.
The mouthfeel was velvety smooth and warming. Carbonation was a bit low but fit well here. Bitterness in the finish was appropriately expressed.
A unique and one-of-a-kind effort. Consider sending samples to Churchill Downs in order to start a beer tradition to complement the Mint Julep.
