Shore Thing Pina Colada Berliner Weisse by Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. was judged using the 2021 BJCP Guidelines under the category of 23A ( Berliner Weisse ). The pour of this beer revealed a straw pale hue that was both cloudy and hazy in appearance (okay for style). The aroma of this beer slightly hints of tropical fruit, such as pineapple and coconut. Hop aroma was negligible (again, okay for this beer style). The flavor yielded complexity of light pineapple, coconut and guava flavors melded with a nice malt backbone that hints of bread-like components. On top of this, because it is a Berliner weisse there is sourness/tartness associated with the style. The sourness/tartness was surprisingly somewhat mild and not as mouth-puckering as I was anticipating. Rather, melding the sourness and fruit flavors worked well together with this beer. The Berliner weisse had a medium body and mouthfeel. The carbonation was moderate and it could have been boosted up a bit. Overall, this is a nice Berliner weisse that had the requisite sourness/tartness associated with this style along with a light malt backbone and hints of biscuit-like flavors. The tropical flavors (pineapple, guava and coconut) work well together making this almost like a beer version of a pina colada. The only comment I would make is that a true Berliner weisse would NOT have fruit flavoring in the beer. Rather the fruit syrup is added to the bottom of the beer glass and the beer is poured on top of this. Still, an enjoyable beer!
