Nuclear Pineapple by Pontoon Brewing is a Berliner weisse, but due to the additions of pineapple, vanilla and lactose it falls into the BJCP category 28C, Wild Specialty Beer.
This beer pours a yellow into deep golden color, with a light haze (normal for the style from the wheat) with a sparkly off-white head that dissipates very quickly (also normal for the style due to the acidity). It has a fairly muted aroma but all of the expected notes are there with sweet pineapple, vanilla and light doughy wheat with a mild lemony tartness. Hints of pineapple upside down cake are present but without as much sweetness. There is much more pineapple in the flavor that is both sweet and tart. It starts with a light doughy malt character that quickly fades into sweet pineapple and finishes with a lingering sourness that builds as you drink it. Very tropical and citrusy. The body is a little big for style likely due to the lactose (which is largely unfermentable), but it's still medium-light. The high carbonation creates lots of tiny bubbles on the palate and the sourness gives a slight puckering on the tip of the tongue. I haven’t had much luck with pineapple beers or lactose sours, so this one was a pleasant surprise as the two worked well together and still let the base beer come through.
