The Most Humble Cobbler, Pontoon Brewing
Description

We don’t mean to brag but be prepared for a tasty treat! We took our base berliner weisse recipe and added a heaping amount of tart cherries, Madagascar vanilla, a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg and lactose, to create a cherry cobbler inspired sour beer that gives you a little bit of sweet, some great tartness and a smooth finish.

The Most Humble Cobbler by Pontoon Brewing is a Berliner Weisse-style ale with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cherries and lactose. I am judging this according to the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines, Category 29B Fruit and Spice Beer.

My glass arrives with a nearly opaque reddish-orange beer in it, sporting rapidly dissipating medium-sized white bubbles. As it approaches, I smell warm cherry pie with its tart cherry dominance, pie crust malt character and soft spices of cinnamon and nutmeg – vanilla lingers and mixes between them all. My first mouthful mimics the aroma, though the vanilla is more prominent and the spices less so.

The malt retains its pie crust character and provides no real lingering sweetness, which is accentuated by the tart cherries. Lactose and vanilla offer a light sweetness to keep the beer from becoming bone dry, though it does finish rather dry. A medium-full body and light carbonation create a pleasant palate experience that carries the tart cherries well.
