BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Ryan: I wrote the recipe.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
Mike: I personally really like the cherry and dark fruit notes that come through in the flavor. The light funk on the nose is quite nice as well.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Mike: It's a reference to a catchphrase of The Simpsons' character Ned Flanders. It's a Flanders-style red ale, so it seemed fitting.
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Mike: It's not mine. I would prefer something much more sessionable for desert island drinking.
Ryan: Probably not. I would have to look at the situation practically and go with a lighter beer so I can still work on getting off the island. :)
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Ryan: Oak filled, tart, dark fruit delight.
BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Mike: This beer was conceived when our barrel program was just a bunch of barrels squeezed in wherever we could find space. By the time the beer was finished, after spending 10 months in barrels, we finished construction on our barrel room and had a dedicated space for all of our fun, barrel-aged projects.
Ryan: The Flanders Red style was one of the first Belgian sours that I tried and instantly fell in love with it. I love the complexity of the style and it has become one of my favorites to seek out. When we started the barrel-aging sour program I knew it was a beer that I had to take a stab at brewing and I think it turned out well for our first time with this style.
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Mike: Pork Loin with fruit chutney on top.
