Samuel Adams and The Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch have announced plans to celebrates its 25th anniversary of brewing beer in Cincinnati, Ohio. Full details are below.
(BOSTON) – In 1997, The Boston Beer Company put down roots in Cincinnati when it purchased the historic Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewery on Central Parkway and renamed it the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Brewery. Today, it’s the city’s largest and oldest operating brewery as it celebrates 25 years of brewing in the Queen City, recognizing the area’s revered past and bright future in craft brewing.
To mark the occasion, Cincinnati-based Boston Beer coworkers will be celebrated throughout the week with special events and memorabilia. The 25th-anniversary celebration will culminate on Friday, May 13 (fondly known as 513 Day) with appearances from Samuel Adams Founder, Brewer, and Cincinnati native Jim Koch, a proclamation from Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, and the launch of a Sam Adams Cincinnati Taproom-exclusive brew, Queen City Crown.
Mayor Pureval and Koch will tour the recently enhanced brewery, which underwent significant renovations over the last 18+ months thanks to support from the Cincinnati Department of Economic and Community Development, JobsOhio, and the Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Cincinnati. The expansion project brought new canning lines as well as new jobs to the brewery to support Boston Beer brands including Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea, and Angry Orchard in addition to Samuel Adams.
Brewed at the Sam Adams Cincinnati Taproom for 513 Day with locally sourced ingredients, Queen City Crown is a special collaboration with Everything Cincy, a one-stop shop for Cincinnatians to learn about local events, deals, and jobs. At 5.5% ABV, Queen City Crown is a light and refreshing cream ale brewed with local honey and aged on fresh peach puree. The aroma is bright and pleasant with hints of ripe peachiness with a touch of doughy malt that finishes very smooth thanks to the honey addition.
Cincinnati is a city built on its beer heritage, and it has played an important role in America’s brewing history. Additionally, it is where Koch’s brewing story began as he discovered his great-great-grandfather’s recipe for what is now known as Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his family’s attic in 1984. Jim is the sixth first son to be a brewer, and his father Charles was a brewmaster at several Cincinnati-area breweries including Schoenling. Since 1997, when Boston Beer Company purchased the very same brewery on Central Parkway, the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Brewery has produced more than 70,000 brews of beer across 25 brand families and 250 unique styles. The company has invested more than $200 million in the site, which has grown from 100 coworkers in 1997 to more than 250 today.
“The past, present, and future of brewing converge right here in Cincinnati,” observed Koch. “Over the last quarter century alone, the American craft beer industry has evolved as dramatically as the Over the Rhine (OTR) neighborhood where the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Brewery stands. I’m honored to celebrate 25 years of brewing in Cincinnati and to share a special collaboration beer with the local community and our 250 Cincinnati-area coworkers. Cheers to the next 25!”
“Everything Cincy is centered around supporting local businesses and celebrating everything that’s great about our city,” Everything Cincy founder Abbey Cummins said. “We loved partnering with Sam Adams because of its local roots, and we are honored to have created the beer that helps commemorate its longstanding positive impact on the city!”
Cincinnatians are invited to celebrate 25 Years of Brewing and the special release of Queen City Crown at the Sam Adams Cincinnati Taproom in Over-the-Rhine from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13. Guests can enter a raffle to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes brewery tour with Jim Koch later that evening. For more information about the celebration, visit: https://fb.me/e/1EqEGXER6
