Ryes or Die Trying by Pontoon Brewing is a Rye IPA, which due to the use of rye and the NEIPA style falls under BJCP category 21B Specialty IPA.
This beer pours a very hazy (rye + hops) and nearly opaque deep yellow color, approaching orange, with a large fluffy white head that clings to the glass. Much like wheat, rye contains a lot of proteins, which aids the foam. The aroma is full of fruity hops with sweet candied citrus (orange and lemon) and mango at the forefront, along with some herbal, grassy and floral hop notes as well. The malt is hard to find behind all the hops, but there is a lightly grainy and doughy bread-like character, which, combined with the hops, is reminiscent of orange marmalade spread on marbled rye bread. The flavor is similar and even more loaded than the aroma. There's tons of juicy, citrus character from the hops and yeast (peach, grapefruit, apricot, tangerine, mango) with a soft malt backbone, a light spicy rye finish and a touch of pine. Although the beer is hop-forward, it's only in flavor and aroma as the bitterness is rather subdued, but enough to keep the beer balanced, although there is a bit of sweetness. This was a potent yet approachable NEIPA with a kick of spicy rye to add a bit of complexity that mingles well with the waves of fruity hops.
