Mango Margarita Gose by Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer (Category 28C) from the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines.
This beer pours a cloudy orange color and looks like a glass of mango juice that sports a thin, white head. The aroma features a prominent tart, fresh squeezed lime juice and lime zest, with a touch of lemon weaving through. As it fades down, light mango makes an appearance to provide another layer. The mango also offers an impression of sweetness in the aroma. A very light grainy malt develops behind the fruit for balance.
The flavor offers more of a balance between the fresh lemon and lime with the tropical mango slipping in behind. Light saltiness and moderate acidic sourness emerges mid-palate and lingers through into the lightly sweet finish. Light grainy malt develops and reminds you that this is truly a beer and not some lovely mango juice. Don't expect much hop character in this beer as it is not the focus. The sharp and refreshing sourness is prominent but not aggressive. This a somewhat full-bodied beer with moderate carbonation as well as a creamy mouthfeel.
This is a well-brewed, fruit-centered sour, the lemon-lime character is quite refreshing and just in time for the hot summer. It's like a margarita without the tequila, but if you concentrate hard enough you might be able to convince yourself it's actually there.
