Jam Up The Mash by Collective Arts Brewing is being evaluated as a Mixed-Fermentation Sour Beer (Category 28B) from the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines.
This unfiltered beer pours a hazy bright yellow with a white head that leaves a thin stand of fine bubbles on the beer. The aroma is complex with a sharp tartness up front followed quickly by orange and a touch of lemon, sour peach leather and a light grassy character from the dry hopping. A light bready, grainy malt character develops as the beer opens up.
The flavor features a prominent, but not aggressive, sharp lactic sourness with lemon peel, light pineapple, melon and a hint of savory character as the beer warms. A light bready, grainy maltiness emerges mid-palate along with a very light hop bitterness. Light residual sweetness in the middle shifts into a medium-dry finish. The sourness is refreshing and lingers long through the aftertaste. The fermentation and dry hopping creates a complex fruit character. The medium body, very light alcohol warming and moderately high carbonation rounds out the overall profile.
This is a well-balanced and harmonious sour ale that leaves you wanting more. The dry hopping creates a very pleasant citrus quality that lends itself well to the sourness. A very enjoyable beer that checks the boxes for style. On a side note, you will also enjoy the wonderful artistry of the labels, as they are both fun and imaginative.
