Earnest Brew Works in Toledo, Ohio has announced a new brew that pays tribute to the famous sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which occurred 45 years ago. Full details from the brewery are below.
On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior during a hurricane-force storm. Now, 45 years later, Toledo craft brewery — earnest brew works — will pay tribute to the 29 men that perished 'when the gales of November came slashin,' as described in the 1976 Folk song 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' by Gordon Lightfoot.
Gales of November is a Blackberry Sour that will be canned by ebw on Tuesday, November 10 in honor of the men that were aboard the ill-fated freighter.
Along with Toledo being home to the National Museum of the Great Lakes, Edmund Fitzgerald Captain Ernest M. McSorley resided in the Toledo suburb of Ottawa Hills before his death, which struck a chord with brewer/owner Scot Yarnell and helped in wanting him to create a beer to honor the tragic event.
With blackberry flavors bursting forth along a tart backdrop, Gales of November (7.5% ABV, 30 IBUs) includes Mosaic hops — noted for its berry medley aromas — and Huell Melon, which gives an intensely fruity smell and taste as well.
4-packs of Gales of November will be sold in 16 oz cans and retail at $15.99. The beer will be released at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 14 in the ebw taproom.
Earnest Brew Works — located at 4342 S Detroit Ave. in Toledo — is a brewer-owned and operated craft beer production facility and taproom that opened in November of 2016 on Toledo's Southside near the corner of Detroit and Byrne. Co-founder Keefe Snyder and Scot Yarnell have over 20 years of homebrewing experience and many more as craft beer enthusiasts.
