Greg Scott: Crafty Celebrity Stories

Singer/songwriter Greg Scott joins The Beer Connoisseur for the next installment of Crafty Celebrity Stories, which features the best tales of ale (and more) from leading actors, celebrities and persons of interest.

Greg appeared on NBC's Songland S2E8 as a featured songwriter, winning the episode and having his song "Miracle" chosen for popular singer Bebe Rexha. The song was also slated to be used in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before they delayed by COVID-19. Greg is married with two children.

1. Beer drinkers like to laugh. What’s the funniest drinking story you can share with us?
One I like to tell is I was invited to Ryan Tedder’s (OneRepublic) Hollywood studio to work on the second version of my song ‘Miracle’. I thought I was just going to your typical everyday studio but the gates opened up and I was overtaken by the foyer looking straight out through the house to a dreamy Zen-like Buddha overlooking a serene crystal white pool. The water separated two of the four studios in the house. His assistant offered me an espresso and I took a moment by the Buddha to try and comprehend what the “F” was happening. If that wasn’t enough, I go to use the bathroom and sitting on the toilet was a Grammy Ryan won for Adele’s 21 album. Winning a Grammy is my ultimate goal and has been a dream of mine my whole life. For that to be my line of sight while relieving myself was as surreal as you would think. After washing my hands, you know I had to pick that bad boy up. I looked in the mirror and had a Wayne’s World moment: “It will be mine. Oh yes. it will be mine.”

2. Who's the coolest person you've had a beer or drink with?
I have a couple. The coolest I’d have to say are comedian DL Hughley and Eric Davis (NFL/Super Bowl winning San Francisco cornerback) hands down. Eric Davis and I, after one of my shows, had a semi-serious conversation about my wife and I owning the 49ers one day. I’m a huge Niner fan! Me thinking it was a joke, Eric said, “Naw man. The York family would never sell”. That was enough for me to think Eric thought I was serious, haha. Still dreaming though!  

3. What are a few of your favorite craft beers and why?
My favorite has to be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I love how bitter and hoppy it is. Second I’d have to say Lagunitas IPA. I’m very much in love with Marin county (right next to Petaluma, CA), I met my wife there and was introduced to the sweet bitter flavor of their beer!   

4. Do you have a favorite (craft) brewery or breweries and why?
As mentioned above. Sierra Nevada all day! I’m from Chico, CA where it was founded and still is brewed. My Dad would hang out in Ken Grossman's garage and try some of the first experimental brews. Also, my first big album release show was at Sierra Nevada's premier live music venue inside the brewery.  

5. Have you attended or performed at any beer events or festivals that you particularly enjoyed? What made them stand out?
Sausage and Suds Music Festival in Downtown San Leandro, CA. The vibe was on fire. Anytime you mix good brew and good music you get those good crazies! Never seen hippies so happy to dance to R&B soul music.

6. Did you have any good drinks in between takes or secretly in the studio on NBC's Songland?
I did. When I was in the studio at Ryan Tedder’s and in his fridge, full to the brim, was a glorious stash of his own drink Mad Tasty. If you don't know it’s a sparkling water with zero sugar or sweeteners and 20 mg of hemp extract! Lets just say the session was super chill.

7. What upcoming projects / music do you have brewing? 
I just released a new single called ‘I Still Do’, streaming everywhere you get your music. October 16th I’ll be doing a special live stream show that’s paired with an alcohol that’s sent directly to your house (follow me on Instagram @gregscottmusic for more info) a super unique experience! I can’t wait. Also, I’m currently working on a new album for next year when my song ‘Miracle’ with Bebe Rexha is released for the Olympics.
