Together We Ryes by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is a Belgian Rye Ale, which would fall into Alternative Grain Beer (BJCP 2015 Category 31A) due to the use of rye, with the base style probably falling closest to Belgian Pale Ale (24B). It pours a deep yellow color, approaching golden, with a bubbly off-white head that lasts. There is also a bit of haze likely due to the incorporation of rye.

The aroma is very yeast-forward with notes of clove, banana, bubblegum, coriander and white peppercorn. Beyond the yeast there is light crackery malt with a hint of pumpernickel and low earthy hops. The flavor is similar with lots of esters and phenols from the yeast, mostly leaning towards banana, bubblegum and clove. Spicy rye bread notes come out in the middle of the palate along with honey and crackers, which help to balance the yeast. Despite the low hops, the bitterness sneaks in at the back end exaggerates the dry finish. The mouthfeel has a little bit more body than typical for the style, which may come from the rye which can introduce higher beta glucans -- a glucose polymer that increases viscosity. The carbonation is moderately high, but not as effervescent as most Belgian style beers are.

Overall, it’s a tasty brew that is great for the summer heat. The addition of rye plays well with the phenols adding to the spicy character, but it’s not so apparent that it is obvious rye is there.
