Sun King Brewery Head Brewer Dave Colt & Barrel Manager Andrew Hood Talk Lyrical Poet

Sun King Brewery Head Brewer Dave Colt & Barrel Manager Andrew Hood Talk Lyrical Poet

We spoke with Sun King Brewery Head Brewer Dave Colt & Barrel Manager Andrew Hood about Lyrical Poet.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
The base beer, is an imperial stout, created by Dave Colt. Lyrical Poet was a joint collaboration with Dave and Andrew Hood. The thought behind the beer was to make a recipe that would be modeled after a raspberry truffle.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Sun King's beer names are heavily influenced by our favorite music. Dave was listening to 90s rap and the name, Lyrical Poet, popped into his head and he thought it would make a great beer name. Dave is notorious for keeping a catalog of beer names in his phone.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Although Lyrical Poet is loaded with delicious chocolate and raspberries, Andrew Hood would pick Sun King's Pachanga Mexican-Style Lagerl, an easy drinker that comes in at 4.3%.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Boozy, bourbon-y, fruity, chocolatey, jammy, oaky and delicious.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Dave was channeling his inner Vanilla Ice because he is a Lyrical Poet. (Check the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby for this reference).

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Goes great with Samoa cookies or a Double Chocolate Kentucky Pie.
