We spoke with Wild Leap Brew Co. Chief Brewing Officer Chris Elliott about Alpha Abstraction Vol. 3.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I am responsible for all of the beer development at Wild Leap, however It’s important to give credit to all of our employees and friends in the industry when a recipe is successful. A lot of pilot batches and detailed critiques shaped this beer into what it is today.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The flavor is my favorite aspect. My goal for this series was to make a beer that tastes as close to fruit juice as possible using only water, malt, hops, and barley. The Mosaic hops really gave the beer a flavor that mimics a unique tropical fruit juice blend.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
We had an intensive brainstorming session and our CEO, Anthony Rodriguez, gets credit for this one. We wanted the flavors and aromas in the series to give a “summary” of how the featured hop tastes, similar to the abstract at the beginning of a scientific article. I love beers that perfectly profile a hop variety so well that the growers can point to the beer as a “sample” of their product. I wanted to do that with this series. And Alpha Abstraction just clicked.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
I can do it in 12 words with the help of Sir Mix-a-Lot: “I want ‘em real thick and juicy. So find that juicy double.”
