Heathen Brewing Head Brewer Nate Froehlich Talks Reindeer Tears Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine

Nate Froehlich Heathen head brewer

We spoke with the Heathen Brewing head brewer Nate Froehlich about Reindeer Tears Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine.

Who came up with the beer’s recipe?
This is one of Heathen’s “Heathenal” beers that was bottled from day one. At the time, the goal was to make a world-class barleywine and then kiss it with a touch of bourbon and oak. Each year we make subtle changes to keep this beer evolving towards perfection.

What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
It is an exceptional barleywine that is even better because of the bad ass label. This was our artist’s (Kyle Shold) first label, and we fell in love with his artistic DNA from the start.

Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Rich caramel with notes of bourbon whiskey and candied fruit.

What is a good food pairing for this beer?
The crispy, burnt sugar and rich custard of a classic Crème Brulee pairs nicely with this beer.
