Brauhaus Riegele Wins 12 Medals at Meiningers International Craft Beer Award

Brauhaus Riegele in Augsburg, Germany took home a dozen medals in the Meiningers International Craft Beer Award ceremony in mid-May.

Riegele Brewery won two platinum medals for its Auris 19 and Riegele Hell Alkoholfrei. The brewery received eight gold medals, for its Magnus 18, Dulcis 12, Noctus 100, Robustus 6, Simco 3, Amaris 50, Augsburger Herren Pils, and Bayerisch Ale 2, and it was awarded two silver medals, one for Commerzienrat Riegele Privat and the other for Riegele Feines Urhell.

NEW YORK –– The Meiningers International Craft Beer Award, which took place in mid-May, has announced the winners after reviewing more than 1,200 beers from 31 countries. Riegele Brewery of Augsburg, Germany, received a dozen medals, including two platinum, eight gold and two silver.

This marked the sixth year the German publishing house giant, Meininger International, has held the International Craft Beer Award. Ninety judges from 13 different countries––made up of brewers and beer sommeliers or sensory experts from the fields of research and teaching––tested a total of 74 beer styles.

Riegele Brewery took home two platinum medals for its Auris 19 and Riegele Hell Alkoholfrei. With its tasting methodology, the Meiningers competition sets high standards for beer evaluation. Using the international 100-point scale, the beers are not measured against each other, but are instead judged individually on their appearance, aroma, taste and drinking experience by a six- or seven-strong judging panel. The award also includes a sensory description of the aromas and attributes typical of each beer style. These descriptions are used to produce an aroma diagram that is not only easy to follow for brewers and consumers alike, but that also provides a first impression of the beer’s taste.

Founded in 1386 in Augsburg, Germany, Riegele is one of the world’s oldest craft breweries, producing 140,000 barrels per year. Riegele is also one of the most awarded breweries in Europe having won dozens of prestigious brewery awards in Germany. It was recently named Germany’s Brewery of the Year for the third year running by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
