Upland Brewing Co. VP of Brewing Operations Pete Batule Talks Free Time

We spoke with Upland Brewing Co. VP of Brewing Operations Pete Batule about Free Time.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This recipe was developed by one of our brewers, Bill Mullins. He specializes in brewing to style and really nailed this beer.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The balance between the malt and bitterness is spot on. The nutty and light toast character melds nicely with a spicy hop note.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
This beer is one we drink at the end of the shift and often at Lake Monroe near the brewery. It’s just an awesome beer to drink in your Free Time!

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
This is definitely one I’d have on my desert island.  It’s a beer that is very sessionable and would pair great with fresh grilled fish.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Malt and toast character balanced with spicy hop note.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
This beer features 100% Vienna malt sourced from our local maltster in Lebanon, IN, Sugar Creek Malt. Caleb at Sugar Creek collaborated with us to make a great example of the Vienna Lager style.

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
It's a very versatile beer, but it is especially delicious with Mexican dishes, roasted chicken, Indian curries, and grilled salmon.
