We spoke with Scofflaw Brewing Co. Brewmaster Joe McIntyre about Basement Light.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I came up with this one.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I think my favorite aspect of this beer is that it has a low ABV and is crushable yet stays true to what you expect from an IPA. It has a great hop aroma/flavor, a nice balance of maltiness to bitterness, yet most importantly, it isn't watered down.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Our flagship beer is named Basement IPA after our initial R&D done in our owner's mother-in-law's basement before we opened the brewery. Due to this beer being a low-ABV IPA, we found it fitting to call this one Basement Light. Sort of a play on words being that it is a "light" beer as well as the name "Basement Light" conjuring up the image in your head of that creepy light with the pull chain hanging in your basement.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Crisp yet juicy, full of hop aroma/flavor and crushable.
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
I think of backyard cookouts. Burgers, dogs, smoked meats and spicy wings. Something you can have a few of and still leave room for all the food.
