BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Sean Lewis: Pogue’s Run Porter is one of Flat12’s four flagship beers and it’s been around since the beginning. The recipe was developed by our original head brewer, Rob Caputo. Now, as our head brewer, I carry on the legacy of our staple beers, while always coming up with new, exciting brews and programs.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
Sean Lewis: Its robust flavor, and roasty chocolate aroma are complimented by a nice medium body, making it not too heavy and great year-round session brew. So it’s a good thing it’s one of our year-round core beer offerings.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Sean Lewis: Pogue's Run is the brewery’s backyard creek. The name and package design are a reflection of our commitment to cleaning up Indianapolis waterways and green spaces. We work with the great local charities like Reconnecting To Our Waterways and Indy Parks Foundation to help these efforts.
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Sean Lewis: It’s definitely a beer that I will never get tired of drinking. It’s an excellent representation of the style. If I’m going to be greedy, I think our flagship lineup itself would be my desert island beer package. A light-bodied blonde, galaxy-hopped pale ale, over-the-top hopped IPA, and our balanced porter are the perfect combination to keep my palate interested for some time.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Sean Lewis: Robust and rich but not too heavy to have two.
Erik Fox: A traditional porter with roasty chocolate and coffee character.
BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Erik Fox: Not so much a personal story, but I think it's rad that the brewery is in the vicinity where George Pogue settled, and we're only half a block from the Battle of Pogue's Run.”
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Sean Lewis: Pogue’s Run Porter is not just a great to pair with food, but it’s an excellent beer to cook with. We’ve experimented with Pogue’s Run Porter Chili, Pogue’s Run Porter Braised Short Ribs, and I love to drink it alongside a great Shepherd’s Pie.
