pFriem Brewmaster & Co-Founder Josh Pfriem Talks Super Saison

Josh Pfriem Brewmaster/Co-Founder

We spoke with the pFriem Family Brewers brewmaster and co-founder Josh Pfriem about Super Saison.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
A lot of our beers at pFriem are created and evolve through a team approach. I lead the original direction on this beer, but our team has worked together to develop it over time.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The big, but light tropical flavors of pineapple, papaya, kiwi, and nectar.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Most beers at pFriem we just call them what they are. This beer is inspired by the strong or super saisons of the Wallonia region of Belgium.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
No, but it is a great strong, but light beer to enjoy around the winter holiday seasons.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Lemon Meringue foam, papaya, kiwi, honey nectar, finishes tropical & prickly.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
The first time we brewed this beer we built it in a traditional farmhouse way, but dry hopped with new American and New Zealand hops. We didn’t quite know what to expect, not a lot of folks were brewing beers like this then. Our Head Brewer at the time Dan Peterson announced upon first sip, that this beer was a “mouth circus!”

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Boudin Noir sausage, country pate, chicken liver mousse accompanied by a fresh baguette.
