We spoke with Old 121 Brewhouse Co-Owner and Head Brewer Sam Nicholson about Old 121 Lager.
Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This recipe was created by one of the original founders of Old 121, Brett Zahrte. It's been slightly tweaked over the years, but the core elements have been in place for years.
What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
This is an American Lager at heart, but is inspired by the flavor world of Czech pilsners. The result is an easy-drinking lawn beer with tons of flavor. The burst of corn and cracker grain with some Saaz spiciness and a touch of fruitiness from the Andechs yeast make this a go-to day-drinker.
Where does this beer’s name come from?
This beer is our house lager, so we left off all the frills for the name. When regulars come and belly up to the bar, they ask for "Lager" and get a stein full of goodness.
Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
A refreshing, flavorful and crushable lawnmower beer.
What's a good food pairing for this beer?
With high carbonation and flavor that can stand up to bold dishes, this would be a great beer to pair with street tacos or a burger. Enough crisp mouthfeel to cut through fat and heavy flavors but complementary enough to enhance the overall meal.
