We spoke with Devils Backbone Brewing Co. Brewmaster Jason Oliver about Black Lager.
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
The Black Lager was a recipe I developed early on when we were still a small brewpub. We would brew it about 2-3 times a years as a seasonal. We released it in bottles about year two when we built our production brewery.
BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
I love the reward of this beer. It gives you a beautiful garnet black color, wonderful subtle roast flavor, and easy lager drinkability.
BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Devils Backbone’s Black Lager is exactly what it is. It’s a German-inspired schwarzbier (black beer). It’s probably my most creative name.
BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
It could make the short list.
BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Garnet black, medium bodied, with delicate notes of coffee & caramel.
BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
Black lager is a Devils Backbone staff favorite across all departments. We have a warm spot in our hearts for Black Lager and it holds an in-house cult appeal. It’s a classic beer, true to style, and one of the beers I’m proudest of. We all love this beer.
BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
This one comes from Aaron Reilly, our resident beer & food pairing expert – Expresso rubbed hanger steak.
