Brewer Q & A (Issue 19)

96 Rating - Creature Comforts Brewing Co. - Tropicália

Responses from Creature Comforts head brewer, Blake Tyers.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Blake: With our current year-round line up, we piloted those recipes for a couple of years before we opened up. Brewery founders Adam [Beauchamp] and David [Stein] laid the groundwork early on and then the three of us brought it to the finish line.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
Blake: I like the aroma a lot. The balance is probably the highlight to me -- it has a nice hop flavor that isn’t fatiguing.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Blake: Tropicália was a pretty awesome art movement in Brazil in the late 60s. It was a moment where artists were looking to the world for inspiration and bringing their cultural heritage with them… a little of the old blended with the new. It’s pretty interesting because there’s elements of this all over the beer industry right now. Young vs. old, old world vs. new, pioneers vs. wave riders… It’s a nice reminder for us to not forget the history of brewing but to also bring it with us with new inspiration.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Blake: Nope. Mine would probably be a pale ale, pilsner, or saison.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Blake: Soft with ripe fruit, medium-bodied, hop-forward and balanced.

BC: Do you know a story -- or have a personal story -- that revolves around this beer?
Blake: I feel like this beer has been a catapult for our brewery. We’re only 16 months old and many of our triumphs and struggles to this point have been shared with this beer. After nearly all of our big moments, at the end of the day, we’ve all sat down with each other and shared a Tropicália. Those moments that we’ve shared with each other over this beer and our other beers are what make it all worthwhile and are what will keep this beer special to us.
