Abita Brewing Co. Brewmaster Mark Wilson Talks Alphagator

We spoke with Abita Brewing Co. Brewmaster Mark Wilson about Alphagator.

Who came up with this beer’s recipe? 
It was an all-team effort from the start to develop Alphagator. We knew what we wanted to create when we began pilot brewing the beer. We worked together to test various versions until we developed the one that we all enjoyed, and that’s the one you are drinking. 

What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)? 
My favorite aspect of the beer is the juicy hop flavor and aroma. This is a beer you just can’t put down.

Where does this beer’s name come from? 
The Alphagator name combines “alpha” for the high content of hops and “gator” from our popular Andygator brand, which is also a highly drinkable imperial beer. Alpha is also known for being the dominant one and this badass double IPA is at the head of the IPA food chain.

Is this your “desert island beer?” 
I can’t choose just ONE desert island beer! But this guy would definitely be in the 12-pack. That ABV doesn’t hurt either on a desert island! It would make me forget about being stranded and make it a more bearable experience.

Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less? 
This beer is smooth and sweet with a huge amount of hop flavor. It’s very easy to drink and leaves a clean mouthfeel unlike other beers with a high ABV.

What's a good food pairing for this beer? 
Anything you’re throwing on the grill during the summer will pair incredibly well with this brew. But as it stands alone, it still reigns supreme.
